Mandalay Restaurant is named after the ancient Burmese city of Mandalay, which was founded along the Irrawaddy River in 1857 by King Mindon; and it would become the last capital of the independent Burmese kingdom. The city was named after Mandalay Hill, situated at the northeast corner of the city. The hill is a holy place. It is said that Buddha himself prophesied that a great city of Buddhism would be founded at its foot. King Mindon built the city according to this ancient prophecy that foretold its creation on the 2400th jubilee of Buddhism.
From the Irrawady River delta and Andaman Sea in the south, to the lush teak forests and soaring Himalayan Mountains in the north; Myanmar(formerly known as Burma) is an ancient and beautiful country with a culture and cuisine that is as ornate as the people of Myanmar themselves. The staple dishes of Burmese cuisine consist of rich meat and vegetable curries, noodle soups, exotic desserts, and flavorful salads which are made with an endless variety of products. The most famous is a salad of preserved green tea leaves, tomato, shredded cabbage, nuts, chilies, garlic, and lime juice, called lepet tout(A8).
